Background of the study
Academic libraries play a pivotal role in fostering independent learning by providing students with access to a wealth of information resources and support services. In Abakaliki, the evolving academic environment has seen libraries transition from traditional book repositories to modern learning centers that promote self-directed study, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills (Okafor, 2023). The integration of digital databases, e-resources, and innovative instructional programs has enabled students to independently access scholarly materials and engage in research activities without constant instructor supervision. This independent learning is crucial as it builds lifelong learning competencies and enhances overall academic performance. However, challenges such as inadequate technological infrastructure, limited user training, and a lack of continuous professional development for library staff may undermine these efforts (Nwosu, 2024). In response, this study evaluates the impact of academic libraries on promoting independent learning among students. It examines how library facilities, services, and educational programs contribute to students’ ability to learn autonomously. The research further explores the barriers and enablers of independent learning in the library context, drawing on recent developments in library science and educational technology. By doing so, the study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the role of academic libraries in shaping independent learning behaviors and academic success (Eze, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite significant investments in library infrastructure and digital resources, there remains a gap in understanding how academic libraries influence independent learning among students in Abakaliki. Many students are unable to fully harness available resources due to limited digital literacy and inadequate orientation programs. This disconnect affects their ability to engage in self-directed learning and undermines academic performance. The study seeks to identify these challenges and evaluate the effectiveness of current library services in promoting independent learning, with the aim of recommending strategies to enhance library support (Ibekwe, 2024).
Objectives of the study
To assess the role of academic library services in fostering independent learning.
To identify barriers hindering effective use of library resources for self-directed study.
To propose strategies for improving library support to enhance independent learning.
Research questions
How do academic library services influence students' independent learning?
What challenges prevent students from fully utilizing library resources for self-study?
Which strategies can enhance the effectiveness of library support in promoting independent learning?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides insight into the role of academic libraries in promoting independent learning, thereby influencing academic performance and lifelong learning skills. The findings will inform policymakers and library managers on how to optimize library services, ensuring that students gain the maximum benefit from available resources (Adebayo, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
Limited to the topic only.
